The Review
Sited on historic wine grape growing land in an agricultural region of El Dorado County, Boeger Winery has been an icon of modern wine production in the area since the land was first purchased by the family in 1972. Take time to enjoy the beautiful shapes of vines dating back to the 1800s that dot the garden areas.
The Place:  Driving along the winding two-lane road through Apple Hill® to visit Boeger Winery clues you in right away that this is a productive and lush growing area. Youll pass apple barns, Christmas tree farms and wineries set among towering pines and oaks, one vista more gorgeous than the next. Boeger land itself offers a significant change in elevation and conditions on its property, providing diverse microclimates that tease interesting variations from the 30+ grape varieties they grow.
The Experience:  The tasting room is set on a hillside with a seasonal stream trickling under towering trees that pick up the steady breezes of the area. Picnic under the trees or on the lawn next to the original 1872 homestead, particularly stunning during the summer when the flower gardens are in bloom. Polished wood and stone, a spacious tasting bar and large shopping area offering local foods and art encourage you to browse. Pick up some gourmet cheese from the cold case and crackers from the shelves to go with your bottle of wine, and spend some time enjoying the warm breezes and enticing vistas at the family and pet friendly picnic tables.
The Wines:  Boeger is known for its Barbera and its Zinfandels, along with many other consistent award winners. The Boeger family is also recognized for pushing the envelope on grape varieties grown on these hillsides with changes in elevation from 2,000-3,000 feet, and as a result, it offers some interesting vintages and blends that arent necessarily found elsewhere locally. They grow almost all of their own grapes, which gives them excellent quality control of their products.
The People:  Greg Boeger founded this unique winery, with the first modern grapes planted in 1973. He continues to manage the vineyards and tests the boundaries of what can be expected in these Sierra Foothills grapes. His son Justin is the current winemaker, and his style incorporates the best of what each variety offers into wine that are rich, aromatic and easy to match with food or enjoy sipping alone.
Insiders Tips:  The knowledgeable tasting room staff love to talk wine, and if you show sincere interest in local wines and grapes, youll be treated to wonderful stories about the fruit, the winemaking process and the fascinating history of the area. The reserve wine tasting is a great value at a dollar a pour, with the price being deducted from any subsequent purchase or waived completely at the staffs discretion.
