The Review
Driving on the narrow road toward Stone Crest Vineyard on a rainy Ohio Saturday, we were thoroughly enjoy the countryside when I noticed a beautiful home sitting at the top of a nearby hill. As we drove on, I realized that there were grapevines growing on the hillside close to the home, and thats when I noticed the winery sign. After traveling up the long driveway, I was pleasantly surprised to find a charming winery as we crested the hill. This I thought, was my type of winery great views and isolated.
The Place: Walking towards the winery, you will notice a charming waterfall near the back of the winery on the embankment. A private party was hosting a Cajun dinner party under the covered front entryway that provides ample tables and seating. Entering the winery, you will immediately find the long tasting bar; travel past the bar and you will enter the cozy seating area that contains several tables and chairs and a television mounted on the wall.
The Experience: Mike Barker, owner and winemaker, greeted us as soon as we stepped into the winery. Mike poured the tastings and educated us on winemaking and vineyard maintenance. We tried all the wines that Stone Crest Vineyard had in stock. Although several wines were out of stock, as they were getting ready to bottle, they still had several wines to try. I have never been able to say that I liked all of the wines at any of the wineries I have visited, until now! All of wines, from dry to sweet, were wonderful. We purchased a bottle of the Riesling and enjoyed a cheese plate with our wine. As we were finishing, we were offered the opportunity to eat with the private party that was hosting the Cajun dinner. This was my first visit to Stone Crest Vineyard, but I can honestly say, it definitely will not be my last. With the relaxing environment, great wines and friendly and courteous people, one would definitely be able to relax and enjoy their time at Stone Crest Vineyard.
The People: Mike and Cheryl Barker opened Stone Crest Vineyard in 2006. Mike is a former mechanical engineer that takes winemaking to a new level using the newest technology to create fabulous wines that awaken your senses and create an enjoyable wine drinking experience.
The Wines: Enjoy personalized wine tasting with the winemaker himself for 25¢ a sample that includes several varietals of wines including: Pinot Noir ($10.95); Cabernet Franc ($10.95); Chardonnay ($10.95); Riesling ($10.95); Vidal Blanc ($8.76); De Vine-Concord ($9.95); Gemstone ($8.95); Waterfall White-Niagara ($8.95); White Stone-Catawba ($8.95); Red Stone-Concord ($9.95); Blue Stone-Blueberry/Concord ($10.95); Cherry ($8.95); Apple ($8.95); and Strawberry ($8.95).
