The York Mountain AVA is a moderate climate area located in the western portion of San Luis Obispo County near Templeton Gap and approximately six miles from the Pacific Ocean. Due to its location near the Templeton Gap and relatively high elevation, 1500 feet, York Mountain is significantly cooler and wetter than Paso Robles. Andrew York opened the first commercial winery, Asceusio Winery, on York Mountain in 1882. The winery was purchased by the Goldman Family in 1970 and renamed York Mountain Winery, making it one of the oldest continuously operating wineries in the U.S.
