At an elevation of 1980 to 2400 feet, High Valley, located to the east of Clear Lake, is cooler than most of the surrounding Clear Lake areas. Steep slopes and high winds best describe this relatively small basin. Although it is only about 9 miles east to west and 3 miles north to south, it’s climate is suitable for a wide range of both cool and warm climate varieties, with cool climate varieties on the valley floor and warm climate varieties on the ridgelines.
