The Review
South Creek Winery is in a rural area of western North Carolina. The location of the winery is both pastoral and beautiful. Traveling toward the winery, right off South Creek Road, youll see a scenic horse pasture, a red barn with striking artwork, and of course a vast vineyard. The vineyard is immense and covers most of the area around the house, which incorporates the tasting room. The charming, historic, yellow farmhouse is also home to the owners Jim and Mary Rowley.
To get to the tasting room, which is distinctively marked with signage, you travel across their large outdoor courtyard seating area. The area is covered with umbrellas and patio furniture that could comfortably seat a large group. Surrounding the courtyard are lovely trees for shade, plants, and flowers that add to the esthetic appeal. The winery also has occasional music guests, and visitors can sit outdoors and enjoy the tunes while sipping on their wine of choice. The views from the porch are stunning. The countryside allows your mind to unwind, and the atmosphere is absolutely serene.
South Creeks wines are all dry, Bordeaux-style wines. The winery carries a few whites and several reds and offers three types of tastings. The tasting are conducted by both owners who work together seamlessly. Each wine is thoroughly described, and when they see an empty glass they are there to fill it immediately. South Creek produces both a standard and a reserve version of several of their varietals. As a result, guests can learn about, and taste, how barrel aging and different oak choices effect wine. All their wines are delicious, and many have won international honors. Tasting fees are $6, $7, or $10, depending on which tasting you choose. The winery also sells various wines by the glass.
Dry wines might not be everyones cup of tea, but if you enjoy dry Bordeaux-style wines, South Creek is definitely worth visiting. If traveling to North Carolina is too far a journey, the winery sells their wines via their website. Bottle prices range from $14.50 to $49.50.
There are many reasons to visit South Creek. The awesome location and award winning wines are enough to plan a visit today. However, there is one downside: the tasting room and bar is quite small. Visitors stand at the bar during the tasting, and the room didnt seem to be air-conditioned. During the summer, the region can get pretty muggy, and when you pack in about ten people into a small area it can get uncomfortable. Luckily, there is the outdoor patio to turn to, but during a tasting you usually dont wander from the bar. Other than that minor detail, South Creek winery is top-notch.
