The Review

After taking a scenic drive through the peace and serenity of Lancaster County’s rolling farmland, occasionally passing horse-drawn Amish carriages, we arrived at The Vineyard at Grandview, a modest and unassuming winery and vineyard perched at the top of a hill. My first thought was that the winery looked like a charming, gently worn, shabby chic country barn. But when you enter the tasting room, you realize there is more than meets the eye. The tasting room is cozy and warm with elegant tables and chairs, perfect for relaxing and enjoying a glass of wine and some local cheeses. There is a small bar along one side of the room for tastings. A brick wall with a large, iron wine rack displays their wines and elevates the décor.

The reason for Grandview is literally the grand view! Stepping through the glass doors onto the large deck, I was struck by the breathtaking view of the countryside. The deck overlooks the lightly undulating vineyard and nearby farms for as long as the eye can see. The quiet is almost overwhelming. Although, when they have their live music on the deck on Friday nights during the summer, Im sure its no longer quiet! Even before tasting the wines, I knew I wanted to spend time on the deck just absorbing the peacefulness.

But enough with the scenery. Onto the winesand oh, the wines! For a winery that is still fairly new, I was impressed by the quality and selection of wines. What began as a hobby seven years ago in 2009 for Larry Kennel, has now turned into a full-blown family business. Larry spent many hours harvesting roadside wine berries and elderberries to make his specialty dry fruit wines. Friends and family clamored for the wines and encouraged him to sell his wines. After some research, Larry realized his homestead in Mount Joy was good land for growing grapes. He asked for help from his family, and as they say, the rest is history. He now has approximately five acres planted with predominantly premium vinifera grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, and more. He also still makes a few choice fruit wines that frequently sell out.

The tasting was $6 for a “mixed glass,” meaning 6 1 oz. tastes of your choice. They also offered a chocolate and cheese plate for $10.00. While all the wines I tasted were high quality, I was particularly impressed with the 2013 Grand Rouge, a Double Gold winner at the 2016 San Francisco International Wine Competition. Im a huge fan of Bordeaux-style wines and the Grand Rouge was exceptional! It is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot and aged 22 months in French Oak barrels. The Grand Rouge is elegantly nuanced with deep red raspberry, nutmeg spice, toasted marshmallows, hints of leather and vanilla aromas. It’s full-bodied and intense, yet well-balanced. A wine to drink now or enjoy in a few years, if you can wait that long.

Riesling is the crush of my heart, and if a winery has a Riesling, I must try it. I loved the Grandview Riesling, which is a blend of New York and Pennsylvania grapes with notes of bright, lush fruit, a delicate floral nose, and high acidity. Mouthwatering, to say the least. Surprisingly, I also thoroughly enjoyed the Moscato! Anyone who knows me knows I dont drink really sweet wine, much less Moscato. Yet, this Moscato is less sweet than most, with only 3% residual sugar. Luscious peach and orange blossom gave way to a bright, crisp finish that left me longing for more. Enough so that I bought a glass to drink while enjoying the view from the deck, as well as a bottle to go home. It was a pleasure to sip a Moscato that didnt make me cringe with sugar fits.

With high-quality wine, excellent customer service, and a scenic venue, The Vineyard at Grandview is a gem in Amish country. Some may argue that their prices are on the high side for Pennsylvania wine, but in my opinion, the prices are worth it. If you’re not already a fan of Pennsylvania wine, a visit to Grandview will make you one; it is a must-visit destination on any wine lovers journey.
