The Review
Overview: During a recent trip to Colorado to attend my nephews wedding, I had the privilege of discovering a little gem of a winery/orchard in Olathe, Colorado called Mountain View Winery. This place is open year-round and has been in the family for three generations. Mountain View not only has wine tasting but also allows for fruit and vegetable picking in season and conducts tours.
The Place:  From the moment you pull into Mountain View Winery, you get the feeling that there is a lot going on here. There are a multitude of buildings and homemade signs directing you where to go. The metal Quonset huts are used for wine production, and the adobe-style tasting room to the south of the production buildings boasts a rather quaint gift shop. Beyond the production area are the vineyards, orchards and gardens. There is so much to look at that you barely notice the beautiful surroundings.
The Experience:  Mike Young was born and raised in Olathe, Colorado. He and his wife Wendy tend to the winery, in the pristine mountain environment. All of the staff were friendly and knowledgeable about the wines as well as the local area. The tasting room was busy with both locals and tourists, some who had returned for a second day having been impressed with their first taste of Mountain View wines the day before. The room itself has a very trendy, shabby-chic feel, and the selection of Colorado-made gift items was impressive. Gifts ranged from the traditional jewelry items to local jams. The winery also does custom labeling for businesses or events.
Part of the fun at Mountain View is chatting with both fellow travelers and locals. Think of a cool oasis of friends drinking wine on a warm afternoon afloat a shabby-chic-styled sailboat and you get the idea. The winery is currently in the process of developing a weekly celebration they call the Friday Afternoon Club. If it wasnt nearly 700 miles from home I would have signed up.
The Wines:  For such a diverse operation, Mountain View Winery puts out a great selection of reasonably priced wines. We were told by locals that the 2009 Riesling Reserve (unfortunately out of stock) was excellent.
The 2011 Chardonnay ($22) is a classic, buttery white that has won blue ribbons at local fairs, but if you are looking for a lightly sweet white I would suggest the Girls-are-meaner Gewürztraminer ($16) with the taste of Lychees.
The 2012 Barbera Reserve ($32) is a good, complex red and the most expensive wine that we sampled. Mountain Views first Colorado-grown Zinfandel (2012) has a nice, peppery and smoky flavor and may be purchased for $24 per bottle. The Dare Devil Red ($18) is a bold red with a hint of sweetness. This wine won Best Colorado Wine at three regional wine festivals. My favorite wine at Mountain View was the Blackberry Merlot ($25).
Insider Tips:  Mountain View Winery is off the same Highway as Cottonwood Cellars. In fact they are only a few miles apart which makes for an afternoon of wine tasting activity. Wine by the glass at Mountain View is $6.00, and there are discounts of 10% for a half case and 15% for a full case. Personalized labels only add $3.00 to any bottle of wine.
