The Review
Near the beginning of the very scenic Silverado Trail in Napa’s Oak Knoll District, sits Black Stallion Winery. Formerly a historic equestrian club, Silverado Horsemans Center, the theme was kept throughout the entire property. There was an indoor track, training areas, stalls, and seats for up to three thousand spectators. There is a beautiful black stallion statue just inside the beautiful stone entrance welcoming you to the property.
Opened in 2007, Black Stallion winery is owned by the Indelicato Family. Winemaking has been in the family for three generations (over ninety years) and the family, under the name of Delicato Family Vineyards, is one of the countrys leading family-owned wine producers. As a result, it comes as no surprise that theyve made Black Stallion a success.
The spacious tasting room has a rectangular shaped tasting bar providing plenty of room for tasting. No competing for elbow room here. There are also comfortable lounging chairs near the bar and a gas fireplace. The seating area faces the beautiful glass barn-like doors facing the covered patio. The patio is set with cushioned furniture and a gorgeous stone bar. The outdoor area is used for extra tasting room space, large groups, and parties for the winery’s club members. There is also a beautiful and exclusive members only indoor private tasting area.
The gift shop has many horse-themed accessories, jewelry, and Black Stallion Winery-themed clothing. There are horseshoes and many leather accessories that make great gifts. There is also a beautiful dining room facing the cellar. This is a perfect setting for events such as rehearsal dinners and other winery-hosted events. Black stallion offers events such as: Oyster & Wine Pairings, Lobster Feeds, Wine Club Pick-Up Brunches, Kentucky Derby Parties and annual bar-b-ques. The Kentucky Derby Party sounds really fun!
With several different tastings options available, I opted to taste a couple of whites and reds. There is a wide variety of wines here; Chardonnay, Viognier, Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Zinfandel. The very friendly and knowledgeable Maurizio in the tasting room was our host. He walked us through several white and red selections and – big surprise – my favorite wine was definitely the Bucephalus. The Bucephalus is Black Stallion’s upper echelon red blend and retails for $200 a bottle. The 2010 is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Petit Verdot.
Black Stallion is a beautiful place to spend an afternoon with friends tasting award-winning wines!
