Commercial winemaking came to South Dakota in 1996 when the Nygaard family established South Dakota’s first winery, Valiant Vineyards. South Dakota’s cold climate favors fruit wines and wines made from French-American hybrid grapes such as Seyval Blanc, Marechal Foch, and Frontenac.
